best book i’ve read in a while

Apparently, the book I just read is very good and most people knew it before I did. I just happened upon it at the library last week and it had a neat cover and good inner flap write up, so I picked it up. I’m so glad I did.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

I believe this was Erin’s first published novel and if that is the case, I cannot WAIT to read her other books. This woman writes incredibly well and I could picture the circus and other scenes so clearly in my head. I don’t know what else to tell you about it except READ IT!

In a way, I wish someone would make it into a movie, but I don’t know if it would be done justice. I read “Water for Elephants”, but could never watch the movie because of the scenes that talked about harming the animals. But, this book has nothing in it that I would mind watching on the big screen.

While reading this book, it made me stop and consider how we have imaginations…where does the imagination come from? Does everyone have one? I know some folks have better ones than others, but is it something we’re born with? Something we’re taught? My imagination was running wild while reading this book.

the irish guy named “patty”

I had a crazy dream the other night (which happens almost every night), but I thought I’d start blogging about some of these weirdo dreams and trying to figure out where they are coming from.

Part of the dream was about my younger sister who brought home a new boyfriend. He was Irish and his name was Patty. He was teaching my sister how to embroider with pink thread on pink velour. Later on in the dream, I went to work (but my office looked different) and I fell asleep, waking up at 8 pm. While I was asleep, it had snowed 3 inches and I was trying to get home. Before I left work, I went to talk to my boss and he was sitting behind his laptop. I had long hair in the dream (I have a very short cut right now) and my long hair kept pulling toward his computer like it was full of static.

So, here’s my breakdown of why I think I dreamed some of this stuff…

  • I had been talking about my dad’s siblings earlier that day and his sister’s name was Patty.
  • The pink on pink probably came from a guy who was wearing this orange shirt with an orange logo embroidered on it. I had complimented this guy on that subtle design earlier that day. The pink came from me thinking of breast cancer awareness.
  • Not sure about the rest of the dream…my mom always said when she dreamed of white or snow, someone died, so I always hate dreaming about white or snow. I do dream about snow a lot, though.

A few nights before that, I dreamed about my boss’s son (he may be 8 or 9 years old) who was driving this white little pickup around (there’s white again for you). He was herding cows (there’s a pasture full of cows in my front yard) and needed my help. Strange thing was, these cows turned to homosexual men while we were herding them… I’m thinking that part came from me seeing my gay friend around that time? Anyway, it was a strange dream, too. I’m sure they’ll get even weirder the closer we get to the full moon!

vivid dreams

My 7 month old son is down for a nap and I do wonder what he dreams about. I always thought it would be neat to invent a “dream machine” that hooks up your head while you sleep and plays your dreams like a movie.

I had this crazy dream last night (or in the wee hours of the morning, I guess) about going to the hospital to have a baby (no, I am not pregnant). There were these 4 or 5 birthing tables lined up side by side with no curtains separating them or anything. Also, there were nurses hanging up bags of water for the ladies who were going to give birth, but it wasn’t for an IV – it was for them to drink. I was sitting at the foot of one of the birthing beds and they bring this lady in to give birth. I could tell they were in a hurry with her – the baby was almost there.

So, they get her on the table and she pushes ONE time and this very furry baby comes out! It almost looked like a monkey because it had so much hair on its back. The weird part is there were about 10 family members watching this birth as well (men, women, children). It got even stranger when they rolled the lady off the birthing table (pretty much immediately) and said she was 69 years old! She looked that old and I was just amazed that she had a baby at that age.

So, here are my thoughts about this random dream:

  • I think the furry baby/monkey thing came from an email from my sister yesterday. I believe the subject line was “Bill Nye says creationism is bad for children.” and the message of the email was “This makes me sad.” Well, it made me sad, too, because I always liked Bill Nye the Science Guy when I was growing up and for him to NOT believe in creationism is such a loss.

Poor Bill Nye – all confused about how the world came to be.

  • Another furry baby thing could be from my son’s small patch of fuzz on his lower back. I’ve always found it amusing.
  • The water part, I’m not sure about. They let me drink water while I was in labor, but some hospitals don’t, I’ve heard. I’m a big H20 drinker, so maybe I was thirsty in my sleep?
  • The old lady having a baby – I have NO earthly idea where that came from.

I dream pretty much every night – some random, crazy stuff sometimes. I think I should do a dream blog. Now, if I could just illustrate what I dream, I’d be on to something. Happy slumber!

blogger’s block

It’s amazing how you can have so many darn ideas flying around in your head and not be able to verbalize a single one of them. That’s what I’m experiencing – blogger’s block (am I the first to use that term? It would be really cool if so!).

Some of the crazy things I’ve been wanting to blog about include (but are not limited to):

I’ve been contemplating carrying around a notebook to jot down my ideas and thoughts. You’d think I would use this “smart phone” as a notepad, but that would be too easy. When on the go, I’m more of a pen & paper kind of gal.

This is the gadget that I’m sure is really neat if I would only try it out!

Speaking of pen & paper, I have a serious case of buyer’s remorse. Over a month ago, I got these neat contraption called an apen – it records what you write and converts it to type. The great part is that I haven’t used it at all…nope, not even once. How pathetic. OH, that was another one of my ideas to blog about – how I was addicted to those daily deal sites, but then I had to get a new computer and my home pages weren’t saved, so now I don’t see them every day so I’m not spending so much money on stuff I don’t need. That was almost a run on sentence.

SO…now, what to blog about? I think I’ll pick the irony about the lady I used to know.
